THE TEAM THAT MAKES THE DREAM WORK

Kerry Lamoureux

Owner / Brewer / Horror Enthusiast

Kerry brings dedication and a fearless spirit to our team, shaped by his past as an industrial firefighter and a proud alumni of the Morinville Volunteer Fire Department. When he’s not crafting exceptional beer, he’s indulging in his love for movies, sketching, exploring the great outdoors through hiking and camping. A devoted father, Kerry balances his passions with family life, bringing creativity and hard work to everything he does. Whether it’s brewing the perfect pint or discussing classic horror films, Kerry is always up for a great conversation!

Josh Watson

Owner / Brewer

Josh Watson is one half of the dream team behind Sturgeon Brewing Company. Where he and his business partner, Kerry, turn water, hops, and a little bit of magic into something worth raising a glass to. A father of three, Josh has mastered the art of multitasking-balancing beer, kids, and the occasional curling stone (sometimes all in the same day). When he’s not brewing, you’ll find him outdoors, hiking trails, or convincing his friends that “just one more round” applies to both beer and curling.

Spencer Gelinas

Assistant Brewer / Bartender

Spencer has a passion for craft beer and has been working in the brewing industry since 2021. He completed the Brewmaster program at Olds College and also holds a business degree from UMO. With a strong athletic background, he played lacrosse at both Division 2 level and in Junior A. Beyond brewing, Spencer is an avid hockey fan (especially when it comes to the Oilers) and enjoys listening to podcasts. In his free time, he loves traveling, golfing, and spending time with his wife, Jennifer, and their cat, Gus.

OUR STORY

In The Beginning...

From Garage Hobby to Craft Beer Dream: Our Brewing Journey

What began as a casual weekend hobby in the garage quickly spiraled into a full-blown passion for brewing great beer. Like many home brewers, we started simple with wort kits and a couple of carboys, learning the basics and getting hooked on the process. The satisfaction of cracking open a bottle of our own homebrew was unmatched, and that early excitement pushed us to keep improving.

It wasn’t long before we made the leap to all-grain brewing. The control and creativity it offered opened up a whole new world for us, and we dove in headfirst. Around the same time, we graduated from bottling (cleaning, capping, and waiting) to kegging. It changed everything. We built a keezer (a chest freezer converted into a beer cooler with taps) and suddenly, pouring a cold pint of our own beer felt like running our own little taproom.

Fermentation and temperature control became the next frontier. We realized that dialing in those details made a huge difference in flavour and consistency. As our beer improved, so did our confidence. We started to hear the same thing from friends and family: “You should really be selling this.” Eventually, we agreed.

What started as a couple of curious brewers in a garage turned into a full-time pursuit. Now it’s time for us to build a space to make that happen.

The Build

Our Journey Continues… Building Our Brewery

With our plan in place, the next step was finding the perfect location to bring our dream to life. We discovered a cozy little spot right in the heart of Morinville. It wasn’t quite as large as we originally envisioned, but we could already see our vision taking shape within its walls.

This building has a history. It started as a bank—yes, the vault is still here—then became Drayden Insurance, and later a Telus store. When we took it over in early 2019, it was time to strip everything down and start fresh. After demolition, we were left with a wide-open, blank canvas.

We marked out our layout with tape on the bare concrete floor, and seeing it in real space—rather than just on paper—was a huge milestone. Next came the heavy lifting: cutting into the floor for plumbing, framing the walls, and building out the washrooms, kitchen, bar, and a brand-new cooler (a massive upgrade from our old keezer).

When it came to the bar top, we were lucky to have our friend Tony lend his woodworking skills. The finished piece became the heart of our taproom—thanks, Tony!

With the space built, we turned our attention to equipment. The brewhouse, fermenters, and kegs were ordered, and we stocked up on ingredients. We teamed up with Hammer Malt in Westlock, who supplied us with the high-quality barley we needed (and still use today—thanks, Keith!).

Now that we have everything ready it’s time to brew, brew, brew. One small thing though…Covid hit. It’s now March 2020 and the world shuts down. We have tanks full of beer, kegs that have not shown up and no way of opening the doors. What do we do?  We waited, watched, and hoped. Then came some good news: breweries and keg distributors were declared essential. We’re back in business baby.

On April 14th, our kegs arrived. Four days later, on April 18th, we officially opened our doors.

It wasn’t the launch we imagined, but we made it. Looking back, it was a wild ride—full of challenges, surprises, and a lot of heart.

Present Day

Our Journey Continues… The Craft Beer Chapter

With the brewery finally up and running, our focus shifted to what we love most—brewing the best beer we can and sharing it with our community. When we opened our doors, we started with just three beers on tap. With nine empty taps staring back at us, we knew we had some work to do.

The beauty of having a small system is the freedom it gives us. We get to experiment, play around, and push the limits of what a craft beer can be. Over the years, we’ve brewed some truly fun creations. A few highlights include Saturday Morning Cartoons—a blueberry waffle breakfast beer complete with syrup, Wake’N Cake—our anniversary brew made with actual birthday cake, and our Father’s Day Sour Series featuring flavours like blue raspberry Jolly Rancher, watermelon Jolly Rancher, and pink Starburst.

Being part of the Alberta Small Brewers Association (ASBA) has also been a huge benefit for us. One of our favourite traditions is the Unity Brew—an annual event where brewers from across the province come together to craft a single beer. It’s not just about brewing; it’s about building connections, sharing stories, and celebrating what makes this industry so special. We’ve been lucky enough to meet some incredible people along the way, people we’re proud to now call friends.

But the journey isn’t just about what happens in the brewhouse. Our space has become a hub for the community. From cornhole tournaments and stand-up comedy nights to wedding parties and even serving as the unofficial beer gardens for the Father’s Day car show, we’ve had the privilege of being a part of so many memorable moments right here in Morinville.

We’re endlessly grateful to everyone who has supported us, shared a pint with us, and helped make our brewery a true Morinville staple.

Here’s to many more years, many more friends, and of course—many more great beers. Cheers! 🍻
